Guy de MAUPASSANT (1850–1893). Signed letter. No place, no date [circa 1886]. 2 pp., in-12. Letterhead “Sur le Bel-Ami” (Cannes) and embossed initials “GM.” Maupassant is writing a new novel aboard his yacht, the Bel-Ami, and is suffering from eye problems: Dear Sir. As soon as I have something suitable for your magazine, I will be quick to offer it to you, but I cannot promise that it will be right away, first because I am working on a new novel that I cannot interrupt, and second because my eyes are once again so troubled that I cannot write to you myself [ ]. It was syphilis that caused Maupassant’s vision problems.
