GUILLAUME COURTOIS (detail from) Joachim and Anne Have a Vision of the Immaculate Conception Oil on copper, 34x26 cm The painting features a rare iconography, with God the Father among the angels revealing to Anna and Joachim the birth of the Immaculate Conception, depicted as a young girl. This work blends the Cortonesque influences of the artist’s training with those of Maratti and Bernini. The copper plate is a mirror image of the canvas preserved in the Basilica of St. Praxedes in Rome. In this case, the painter—someone from Courtois’s inner circle—reproduced it based on a mirror-image engraving by Carlo Franceschini from 1670.
