PAINTER OF THE XVIII CENTURY Pan and Syringe Oil on parchment, 23x30 cm The work under consideration is derived from Edmé Jeaurat's 1718 engraving, itself taken from Pierre Mignard's painting, now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. It recounts the episode in which Syrinx, attempting to escape from Pan's clutches, comes near a swamp to the bank of the river Ladon (personified in the bearded male figure). Here she invokes the help of the Naiads who, to save her, turn her into marsh reeds.
