ROBERT HUBERT (from the series) Architectural Capriccios with Figures Pair of tempera on paper mounted on canvas, 37.5 x 47.5 cm The two tempera paintings depict architectural caprices: the first shows a classical Roman-style temple with fluted columns, archaeological ruins, and figures of fishermen or travelers along a waterway; the second depicts classical ruins covered in greenery with small figures of travelers, resting herdsmen, and Maremma cows. The style is typical of 18th- or 19th-century landscape and veduta painting, inspired by artists such as Hubert Robert or the Grand Tour tradition
