MASTER OF THE GUARDESQUE FLOWERS Vase of Flowers Oil on oval canvas, 89x66 cm The painting is attributed to the “Master of the Guardesque Flowers,” a famous—and still mysterious—18th-century Venetian painter. This anonymous artist has long been identified as Francesco Guardi, a hypothesis still debated by scholars. The painting stands out for its light background, masterful composition, and richly colored “paste grasse” application. The result is a work of great, festive luminosity and beauty, among the most highly regarded of 18th-century Venetian art. Bibliography: U.
