ABRAHAM JANSSENS (circle of) The Philosopher Heraclitus Oil on canvas, 72x57 cm In this half-length portrait of a bearded man in tears, one can easily recognize Heraclitus of Ephesus, the “weeping philosopher,” with his characteristic melancholic expression. Heraclitus weeps for the fate of men who cannot escape the ceaseless flow of change, unable to heed the voice of truth. The rendering of the surfaces, the energetic and full brushwork, and the high quality of the drawing point to an attribution to a Flemish artist influenced by Caravaggism, not unlike Abraham Janssens. Numerous copies exist of this painting, which enjoyed considerable success. A very similar version is located in Munich, in the Staatsgemäldesammlungen Alte Pinakothek.
