17TH-CENTURY ROMAN PAINTER Scene with Ancient Philosophers Oil on canvas, 210x254.5 cm This composition, of high artistic quality, reinterprets the figures of philosophers from Raphael’s *School of Athens* in a proto-Baroque style. It draws on the Vatican model not through a literal reproduction, but rather through the arrangement of the figures, their poses, and their depiction as engaged in writing or meditation. The painting therefore appears to be an interesting academic exercise created in Rome within the studio of Carlo Maratta.
