GIUSEPPE NOGARI Portrait of a Young Singer with a Sheet of Music Oil on canvas, 72x56 cm During his lifetime, Nogari painted other singers, but this is certainly one of the most beautiful and inspired. This young woman, so full of grace, could perhaps be the famous Anna Girò (also known as Annina Girò or Anna Giraud), an Italian contralto who was Antonio Vivaldi’s favorite pupil, muse, and constant prima donna. Due to their very close professional partnership and their constant travels together, countless rumors about their relationship circulated at the time. This connection also dealt a severe blow to Vivaldi’s career: in 1737, the Cardinal of Ferrara barred him from entering the city because of his conduct, which was considered inappropriate for a priest (the “Red Priest” who did not say Mass and traveled constantly with women). Stylistically, the painting bears a strong resemblance to the portraits of Vivaldi painted by Nogari, which were recently rediscovered by Federico Maria Sardelli and published in the book *Il volto di Vivaldi* (Sellerio, Palermo, 2026).
