JEAN DUCAYER Allegory of November, from the "Months" series Oil on canvas, 114x86 cm, inscribed "NOVEMBER" in the upper left corner. Jean Ducayer, a court painter active in the early 17th century, was recently rediscovered thanks to an exhibition held in 2022 at the Hôtel d’Agar in Cavaillon—the first ever dedicated to him. Probably trained in the circle of François Clouet, Ducayer is known for his refined portraits of the Parisian nobility, which combine elegance, attention to detail, and idealized figures. His work reflects a portraiture rooted in the tradition of the French Renaissance, while also anticipating the stylistic developments of the reign of Louis XIII. In the castles of Piedmont, notably in the collections of Racconigi Castle, there are many paintings attributable to this artist, some of which also depict ladies of the House of Savoy: it remains to be determined whether he ever visited the ancient Savoy duchies.
