17TH-CENTURY ROMAN PAINTER The Chariot of Venus Oil on canvas, 144x182 cm The painting is loosely based on a famous, similar composition by Piero da Cortona dating from between 1622 and 1623, now in the Capitoline Picture Gallery in Rome but formerly in the Sacchetti collection. The artist of this painting takes numerous interpretive liberties, suggesting a painter active within Cortona’s circle but endowed with a personality of his own.
