18TH-CENTURY PAINTER Dario’s Family in the Presence of Alexander the Great Oil on canvas, 77x102 cm The painting depicts a famous historical scene, inspired by the renowned masterpiece painted by Le Brun around 1660 and now housed at Versailles. The painting, an excellent work from the 18th century, is based on the original composition. The painting depicts Darius’s mother throwing herself at the feet of the King of Macedonia—who had defeated her son at the Battle of Issus (333 B.C.)—to beg for mercy for her imprisoned family.
