ANDREA LANZANI (attributed to) The Flagellation of Christ Oil on shaped canvas, 212x165 cm, in an original old painted wooden frame. The painting in question, depicting the Flagellation of Christ—conceived as a pair with a second painting depicting the Crucifixion—is attributable to Andrea Lanzani, one of the most significant Lombard painters of the late 17th century in Milan and the very early 18th century. A painter of refined style, Lanzani adopts an orderly and well-structured composition in both paintings, revealing the influence of the Maratti school of figurative art, which he absorbed during his stay in Rome between 1674 and 1677. This compositional framework is paired with a light and luminous color palette that seems to foreshadow certain trends in 18th-century painting. Bibliography: See S. Colombo, M. Dell’Olmo, *Andrea Lanzani*, Milan 2007 Provenance: Villa Gabantino, from the collections of the prominent Mambelli di Schiedo family of Predappio.
