Soccer / Early History “The Ball Game,” circa 1870–1880 Lampshade fabric cut into the shape of a cone segment with a scalloped edge 18 x 36 cm (cracks, tear in the sky, stains) Against a printed landscape background, six boys—applied as chromolithographic cutouts, their neckties fluttering in the wind—compete for a ribbed ball with varying degrees of success. Titled “La partie de ballon” at the bottom, marked “P.P. Déposé” on the right edge. A rare example of the ball games played by young people before soccer was codified in France.
