Cycling / Petit-Breton / Mortane MORTANE (Jacques), Petit-Breton: His Life and His Tours de France, “Les Champions” series, Librairie Bernardin-Béchet, Paris, n.d. (circa 1928–1930) (Cover missing, spine detached, traces of tape) The journalist, writer, and “pope of aviation,” Jacques Mortane-Romanet (1883–1939), treats us to this unexpected biography of the legendary champion Petit-Breton (1882–1917), who was Mortane’s close friend and with whom he collaborated on *La Vie au Grand Air*. This book bears witness to that special relationship. The cover shows the champion nicknamed “L’Argentin.” Born in Plessé (Loire-Atlantique), he had to follow his father into exile in Argentina. He spent his youth there and learned to ride a bicycle before returning to France in 1902 and winning the Bol d’Or in 1904 and the Tour de France in 1907 and 1908. Next year, we will celebrate the 120th anniversary of that victory—and, sadly, the 110th anniversary of his death while on a mission at the front.
