JORDI VILANOVA I BOSCH (Rubí, Barcelona, 1925 – Barcelona, 1998). Headboard, ca. 1960. Pine wood and leather straps. In very good condition. The wood has been restored and the leather straps replaced. Measurements: 90 x 195 x 24 cm. This headboard is an interesting example of the furniture designed by Jordi Vilanova during a pivotal period for the renewal of Catalan domestic design. Its design reflects the influence of Scandinavian functionalism, reinterpreted through natural materials and construction methods rooted in the Mediterranean artisanal tradition. The piece features a pine wood frame with straight lines and balanced proportions, with a central section consisting of vertical leather straps stretched between two horizontal crossbars. The combination of these two materials lends warmth and a sense of visual lightness, while the simplicity of its construction reflects Vilanova’s interest in functional, understated furniture suited to everyday life. Jordi Vilanova was a Catalan designer, cabinetmaker, and interior designer, a pioneer in the modernization of Spanish home furnishings. Trained at the Industrial School and the Llotja in Barcelona, he developed his own design language that combined Nordic influences with Mediterranean tradition. In 1960, he co-founded the La Cantonada group, and in 1964, he received the ADI-FAD Silver Delta Award for his “Delta” children’s stool. His significant professional legacy—comprising drawings, plans, and photographs of his designs—is preserved in the Disseny Hub Barcelona archive.
