VICO MAGISTRETTI (Italy, 1920–2006) for Rosenthal. “Faun” dining table, c. 1980. Wood, metal, and laminate. In good condition, with signs of age and use, such as scratches and small marks, as well as damage to the varnish on the table’s surface. Measurements: 72 x 125 x 125 cm. Italian-designed dining table, “Faun” model, conceived by Vico Magistretti for the German firm Rosenthal around 1980. The piece features a thin-profile circular tabletop finished in coral red, supported by a structure of black legs with a sculptural configuration, whose curved and oblique elements intersect beneath the tabletop, creating an interesting interplay of lines, tensions, and volumes. The design reflects Magistretti’s distinctive sensibility, which successfully blends geometric clarity, formal experimentation, and functionality in objects intended for everyday use. His work for Rosenthal is particularly significant within the career of the Milanese designer, known for his collaborations with major European manufacturers and for a conception of industrial design that viewed the relationship between designer and industry as an essential element of the culture of the modern object. Vico Magistretti (Milan, 1920–2006) was one of the central figures in Italian design during the second half of the 20th century. Trained as an architect, he graduated from the Polytechnic University of Milan in 1945 and pursued a career that spanned architecture, urban planning, and industrial design. His collaboration with Cassina spanned more than four decades, beginning in 1960, and resulted in seminal pieces of modern furniture, such as the Carimate chair, the Maralunga sofa, and the Nuvola Rossa bookcase. He also designed iconic objects for companies such as Artemide and Oluce. Among his most renowned creations are the Eclisse lamp, which won the Compasso d’Oro in 1967, and the Maralunga sofa, which received the same award in 1979. Considered one of the leading figures of “Made in Italy,” Magistretti succeeded in establishing a fruitful dialogue between design, technology, and industrial production. His work is part of the collections of major international museums, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
