CARLO BARTOLI (Italy, 1931–2020) for Kartell. Set of four chairs, model 4875. Italy, design begun in 1970 and released in 1974. Injection-molded green polypropylene. Bears Kartell and model markings on the underside, according to the information provided. The model is part of the collection at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. In good overall condition, with superficial scratches and signs of use. Measurements: 71 × 44 × 48 cm per chair. Seat height: 43 cm. Designed by Carlo Bartoli for Kartell, these four Model 4875 chairs are representative of the experimentation with plastic materials in Italian design of the 1970s. Each combines a continuous, gently curved seat and backrest shell with four independent cylindrical legs. Their intense green color accentuates the unity of the set. The pioneering use of injection-molded polypropylene places this model among the designs that expanded the possibilities of industrial furniture by combining comfort, durability, and ease of production—criteria that remain relevant in 21st-century design. Carlo Bartoli was an Italian architect and designer whose career was characterized by formal simplicity and the exploration of new materials. He collaborated with Kartell, Arflex, and Segis, and created pieces such as the Gaia armchair, on display at MoMA in New York, and the 4875 chair, housed at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. In 2016, he received the Compasso d’Oro Lifetime Achievement Award. His collaboration with Kartell, founded in 1949 by Giulio Castelli, is part of the company’s commitment to incorporating plastics into the home by combining design, technical development, and mass production.
