STEFAN BUMM (20th century). “Argus” table lamp. Germany, 1980s. Black-lacquered tubular steel. Bibliography: Thomas Hauffe, *Fantasie und Härte: Das “Neue deutsche Design” der achtziger Jahre*, Anabas-Verlag, Gießen, 1994, p. 107 (documented model). In good condition, with slight signs of use. Measurements: 37 x 33 x 17 cm. A unique table lamp representative of 1980s German postmodern design, linked to the Neues Deutsches Design movement, characterized by its experimental spirit and its desire to transcend functionalist conventions. The “Argus” model stands out for its original sculptural composition, created using black-lacquered steel tubes that form a structure of angular lines. At the top, a large oval outline with pointed ends evokes the shape of an eye, at the center of which sits a flame-shaped light bulb that visually acts as the pupil. The base, formed by broken profiles arranged asymmetrically, reinforces the dynamism and graphic character of the piece as a whole. Stefan Bumm pursued his artistic and design work in Germany during the 1980s, within the context of new experimental movements that challenged the principles of conventional industrial design. His “Argus” lamp, also known as “Argus-Auge,” is an example of this expressive approach to functional objects and is featured in Thomas Hauffe’s publication on new German design of the decade.
