PHILIPPE STARCK (Paris, 1949) for Emeco. Pair of “Hudson Rocking Chair” rocking chairs, designed in 2000. Recycled aluminum with a hand-brushed finish. In good condition, with some scuffs and slight signs of use. Measurements: 80 x 53 x 60 cm (each). The “Hudson” model is one of Philippe Starck’s most notable designs for Emeco, the result of the first collaboration between the French designer and the historic American manufacturer in 2000. Originally conceived for the Hudson Hotel in New York, it marked the company’s first new design in over fifty years, reinterpreting the lines of its iconic 1944 “Navy Chair.” Handcrafted from 80% recycled aluminum, these rocking chairs stand out for their lightness, durability, and clean lines. They feature a structure with fluid contours, a slightly sloped backrest, open armrests, and curved glides that allow for a gentle rocking motion. Their brushed finish accentuates the elegance of the surfaces and the industrial character of the design. The “Hudson” collection is part of the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Philippe Starck is one of the most influential figures in international contemporary design. Trained at the École Nissim de Camondo in Paris, he gained recognition in the 1980s with projects such as the renovation of the private apartments at the Élysée Palace and the interior design of Café Costes. His extensive career spans furniture, lighting, architecture, and industrial design, with collaborations for firms such as Kartell, Alessi, Flos, Driade, and Emeco. His work is represented in major international institutions, including MoMA in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
