ARNE JACOBSEN (Denmark, 1902–1971) for Fritz Hansen. Set of four “The Ant” chairs, model 3107. Plywood and metal. In very good condition. They feature the manufacturer’s label on the base. Measurements: 80 x 40 x 42 cm (x4). A set of four chairs with organic lines and a lightweight frame, designed by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen. Jacobsen conceived the chair around 1950, while working on the renovation of facilities for the pharmaceutical company Novo in Frederiksberg, Denmark. The project called for a lightweight, practical, easy-to-move, and stackable chair, suitable for a communal dining area. The chair was officially unveiled in October 1952, coinciding with Fritz Hansen’s 80th anniversary. The design was technically innovative: the seat and backrest were formed from a single molded plywood shell, made from nine layers of pressed veneer. Its name, “Ant,” comes from the silhouette of the shell, which resembles the stylized profile of an ant, particularly due to the narrowing in the center between the backrest and the seat. Arne Jacobsen (Copenhagen, 1902–1971) was a Danish architect and designer who graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in 1927 and was a key figure in Scandinavian modernism. He was noted for integrating architecture, furniture, and interior design into a functionalist language characterized by clean lines and organic forms. Among his most famous creations are the Ant (1952) and Series 7 (1955) chairs, as well as the Egg and Swan armchairs (1958), designed for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. He received major awards for his career, and his work is part of international museum collections, including those of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Designmuseum Danmark in Copenhagen, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The manufacturer's label is displayed on the base.
