VICO MAGISTRETTI (Milan, 1920–2006) for Cassina. Two-seater sofa, “Maralunga” model, designed in 1973. Upholstered in a ribbed fabric in a dusty pink shade. In very good condition, with slight signs of wear. Measurements: 72 x 165 x 85 cm. The “Maralunga” model is one of Vico Magistretti’s most iconic designs and a landmark of Italian furniture from the 1970s. Conceived in 1973 for Cassina and awarded the prestigious Compasso d’Oro in 1979, it introduced an innovative solution for comfort through a system of adjustable backrests, operated by an internal mechanism inspired by a bicycle chain. This ingenious feature allows the sofa to be adapted to different relaxation needs. Its generous proportions, padded arms, and enveloping lines reflect a design philosophy that combines functionality and comfort. The ribbed upholstery in a soft powder-pink shade accentuates the piece’s texture and its inviting character. Vico Magistretti was one of the leading figures in 20th-century Italian design. An architect and designer, he built an outstanding career collaborating with firms such as Cassina, Artemide, Oluce, and De Padova. Among his most renowned creations are the “Eclisse” lamp, which won the Compasso d’Oro in 1967, and the “Atollo,” which received the same award in 1979. His work is part of major international collections, including that of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, which also houses a “Maralunga” armchair.
