MICHEL DUMAS (20th-century France) for ROCHE BOBOIS. Modular shelving unit. France, 1970s. Metal and amber-tinted smoked plexiglass. In very good overall condition, with slight signs of wear consistent with its age. Measurements: 252/272 x 237 x 40 cm A floor-to-ceiling shelving unit whose design combines four metal uprights with curved-edge shelves and storage modules suspended at various heights. The transparency of the amber Plexiglas and the slender supports visually lighten the overall design, which can be used as a room divider. Its design combines the functional character of modular furniture with the experimentation with materials and forms typical of 1970s interiors. Founded in 1950 by Jacques Roche, the Roche Bobois firm focused from the outset on distributing the work of the finest French contemporary furniture specialists—strongly inspired by the Bauhaus—such as Minvielle, Steiner, and Airborne, as well as on producing pieces by renowned designers such as Pierre Paulin and Marc Berthier. In the 1960s, the company expanded its catalog to include Scandinavian design, and today it remains one of the most prominent international firms in the field of furniture production and selective distribution.
