In very good condition, with slight signs of wear. Measurements: 72 x 165 x 85 cm. The “Maralunga” model is one of Vico Magistretti’s most iconic designs and a landmark of Italian furniture from the 1970s. Conceived in 1973 for Cassina and awarded the prestigious Compasso d’Oro in 1979, it revolutionized the concept of home comfort through an innovative system of height-adjustable backrests, operated by an internal mechanism inspired by a bicycle chain. Its generous proportions, padded armrests, and enveloping lines reflect a design philosophy that combines functionality and comfort. The distinctive upholstery, featuring fine stripes in shades of brown and black, accentuates the texture and cozy character of the piece. Vico Magistretti was one of the leading figures in 20th-century Italian design. An architect and designer, he built an outstanding career collaborating with firms such as Cassina, Artemide, Oluce, and De Padova. Among his most renowned creations are the “Eclisse” lamp and the “Maralunga” sofa, both of which were awarded the Compasso d’Oro. His work is part of major international collections, including that of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, which also houses a “Maralunga” armchair.
