CARLO BUGATTI (Milan, Italy, 1856–1940, Molsheim, France). Bench, c. 1890. Ebonized walnut wood, with pewter inlay, bone, and copper accents. Upholstered in leather. Measurements: 40.5 x 109.5 x 40.5 cm. A unique bench with an architectural composition and a distinct Orientalist character, representative of Carlo Bugatti’s creative universe. Crafted from ebonized walnut, it features leather-upholstered seats and elaborate ornamentation consisting of pewter and bone inlays, copper accents, and graphically inspired motifs of exotic origin. Its structure, articulated by turned supports and curved crossbars, combines geometric precision with visually rich decoration, resulting in a piece with a strong sculptural presence. The combination of materials and ornamental elements finds parallels in other works by the artist held in major international collections, such as the throne from circa 1890–1900 at the National Gallery of Victoria, in Melbourne, where ebonized wood, copper, bone, pewter, and textile elements come together to form an equally distinctive aesthetic. Likewise, his decorative style echoes the ladies’ writing desk from circa 1890–1898 at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris and the settee from circa 1900 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, both representative examples of his unique conception of furniture as an artistic object. Carlo Bugatti was an Italian designer and cabinetmaker who played a pivotal role in the renewal of the decorative arts in the late 19th century. Trained at the Accademia di Brera in Milan and in Paris, he developed an unmistakable style that fused Moorish, Islamic, and Japanese influences through the use of ebonized wood, parchment, copper, pewter, and bone. His international recognition reached its peak at the 1900 Paris World’s Fair and the 1902 Turin International Exhibition of Decorative Arts. His creations are now housed in prestigious institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, and the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, and they stand as an essential landmark in the history of modern design.
