17TH-CENTURY FRENCH SCHOOL, WORKSHOP OF NICOLAS MIGNARD The Holy Family with the Young Saint John the Baptist Canvas. Height: 91.5 cm, Width: 107.5 cm. Bears a red wax seal on the reverse of the stretcher, bearing the coat of arms of the Polignac family. Historical restorations. Provenance: Polignac Collection. A variation on the painting by Nicolas Mignard, signed, located, and dated 1659, which has been in the collection of the Santa Fe Museum of Art in New Mexico since 1981 (canvas, 91 x 109 cm). See the exhibition catalog *Mignard of Avignon (1606–1668)*, Avignon, Palais des Papes, June 25–October 15, 1979, no. 69, reproduced in color). The variations are notably in the position of Joseph’s face and the sandals on his feet. In Masson’s 1669 engraving, the landscape differs from that in our painting and the one in Aix-en-Provence. Saint Joseph is more similar to the figure in our painting, with sandals on his feet.
