LOUIS FÉRAUD, Paris. Black sequined vest with a plunging neckline. Fastens with five tone-on-tone buttons. Black Louis Féraud label. Circa 1990. Size 36 A Riviera fashion designer who became a leading figure in Parisian haute couture, Louis Féraud made color and volume his signature. Brigitte Bardot, whom he dressed for some twenty films, launched his fame. He presented his first haute couture collection in 1958, alongside Dior, Balenciaga, Lanvin, and Givenchy. Sequins are a hallmark of French couture. In the 1980s, Louis Féraud made them one of his signature evening looks: his fall-winter 1984–1985 haute couture collection included a tunic dress densely embroidered with sequins and rhinestones. Around 1980, Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche also created tops entirely embroidered with black and silver sequins. The Lanvin house, founded by Jeanne Lanvin, has long been renowned for its embroidery and beading. Chantal Thomass added her own flair, drawing inspiration from Parisian cabaret and the boudoir. This Louis Féraud ensemble follows in that tradition: light, spectacle, and masterful couture craftsmanship.
