Moretti, Gaetano, and Ranieri Arcaini. Milan Castle. Umberto I Tower. Milan, 1901–02. The Reconstruction of the Filarete Tower at the Sforza Castle Moretti, Gaetano, and Ranieri Arcaini. Milan Castle. Umberto I Tower. Milan, 1901–02. Set of three technical drawings reproduced by heliotype—two views and one cross-section, measuring 980 x 430 and a smaller one—signed on the plate by the two architects (with discoloration and a restored tear). Set in modern frames. An interesting graphic record of the reconstruction project for the Filarete Tower of the Sforza Castle, destroyed by the explosion of a powder magazine in 1521. The drawings document the tower in its new configuration, dedicated to Umberto I, and are part of the comprehensive restoration project of the castle promoted by Luca Beltrami, which concluded in 1905 with the tower’s inauguration. Gaetano Moretti (1860–1938), architect and director of the Regional Office for the Conservation of Monuments in Lombardy, and Raineri Arcaini, an architect active in Milan who collaborated on the preservation and restoration work, are both mentioned in the graphic documentation pertaining to the Umberto I Tower.
