Allan, David. The Opening of the Carnival in Rome. Paul Sandby, 1780. Complete set of four splendid engravings depicting the Roman Carnival Allan, David. The Opening of the Carnival in Rome. Paul Sandby, 1780. Brown ink aquatint, 590 x 430 mm, signed on the plate in the lower right and dated in the lower center (scattered browning). The lot also includes *Romans Polite to Strangers*, *The Horse Race*, and *The Victor Conducted in Triumph*, which, together with *The Opening of the Carnival at Rome*, constitute the famous complete series of four views of the Roman Carnival, engraved by Sandby after drawings by Allan. Unlike the traditional depiction of the Roman Carnival, often characterized by exuberant color, Allan renders these festive events with a dry, lively, and ironic touch, while at the same time capturing their elegance and sumptuousness. The original drawings were created by Allan during his stays in Rome and are now preserved in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle. A complete set of four splendid engravings depicting the Roman Carnival (4 prints)
