The subject is derived from Giambattista Tiepolo’s painting at the center of the ceiling of the Scuola dei Carmini in Venice. The extraordinary tonal variety—from the deep, velvety black of the foreground, through a rich range of grays, to the whiteness of the saint’s cloak, which, due to the contrast, appears even brighter than the parts of the paper left blank—gives this sheet the character of a very early proof.
