Ferrara, Rossi, 1570. Folio (345 x 240 mm); [8], 635, [121] pages. Title page with a large woodcut featuring the coats of arms of the House of Este, woodcut initials, errata at the end of the volume (a few pages are browned; some sections are slightly loose.) Contemporary full-parchment binding, spine with four raised bands and a beautiful handwritten title (some defects, minor losses). Pigna composed this work when his pupil Alfonso II d’Este came to power and appointed him ducal secretary. Having become the official historian of the Este court, he completed the history of the dynasty begun by Girolamo Falletti. A fresh copy of the first edition
