Dulacq, Joseph. *Théorie nouvelle sur le mécanisme de l'Artillerie*. Paris, Jombert, 1741. Rare first and only edition Dulacq, Joseph. *Théorie nouvelle sur le mécanisme de l'Artillerie*. Paris, Jombert, 1741. Quarto (252 x 190 mm); [8], XVI, 385, [19] pages. Title page with copper-engraved vignette, typographic ornaments engraved by Cochin, 43 intaglio plates outside the text, most of them folded (scattered red spots and mottling, small stains.) Contemporary binding in brown bazzana, 5-rib spine, red edges (modern end piece, hinges damaged). Born in Chambéry, the author was a captain in the artillery of the King of Sardinia and commander of the Field Schools of that same corps in Turin. *La Théorie nouvelle* constitutes an important contribution to the theoretical and practical study of 18th-century artillery, addressing the quality of gunpowder, the motion of projectiles, and the resistance of vaults to the impact of bombs. Dulacq also proposes a new treatment of uniform motion and corrects the methods then used to determine the angle of elevation that allows for a gun’s maximum range. Finally, of particular interest is the instrument he devised to calculate the trajectory of a projectile launched into a vacuum in a given direction and with a defined force.
