Octavo (150 x 97 mm); [4], 108 leaves. (Minor restoration to the lower white corner of the first 10 leaves.) 19th-century full parchment binding, smooth spine with a red label bearing the title in gold, red sprinkled edges. The text is attributed to the Roman Aemilius Macer, but the author is believed to be Oddone di Meung, a French physician who lived in the Loire region around the year 1000. It is based on the works of Pliny, Galen, Dioscorides, and Hippocrates. It describes the medicinal properties of 77 herbs and is written in Latin hexameter, a poetic form that was most likely used as a mnemonic device by physicians and midwives.
