Capaccio, Giulio Cesare. *Gli apologi*. Venice, Barezzi, 1619., Third edition, more complete and extensive than the previous ones Capaccio, Giulio Cesare. *Gli apologi*. Venice, Barezzi, 1619. Quarto (218 x 158 mm); [16], 154 leaves. Title page with woodcut printer’s mark, richly ornamented woodcut headers and initials, 95 woodcut vignettes in the text (a tear on the title page restored in the period, with scattered foxing and discoloration.) 19th-century half-parchment binding with a handwritten title on the spine. Oval vignettes of an emblematic nature introduce each of the short fables, which have a strong moralizing intent, even when narrated “in the style of Carlona.” Written in free hendecasyllables and concluded by a couplet with internal rhyme containing a proverbial saying, the *Apologi* fall halfway between Baroque “concepts” and the more intellectual “moral tales,” an ancient genre rediscovered during the mature and playful 17th century. Third edition, more complete and more extensively illustrated than the previous editions
