Title page within a woodcut architectural frame, portrait of the author on the reverse of the dedication page, plates depicting the author’s tomb, 128 half-page portraits in various decorated frames, 10 of which are without portraits (the last page with the plate is missing; restorations and reinforcements on the margins of the title page and the first few pages; water stains; small tears.) Modern binding in hazelnut-colored calfskin with a six-ribbed spine and gold title, gilt edges. The work presents biographies of sovereigns, military leaders, and men of letters, accompanied by woodcuts by Tobias Stimmer, based on paintings from the portrait gallery of Paolo Giovio’s villa on Lake Como. Alden 575/14 cites it for the entries on Columbus and Hernán Cortés. First illustrated edition
