Two quarto volumes (218 x 127 mm); [2], 392; [4], 409, [3]. 19 out-of-text engravings, 7 of which are colored (slight browning and foxing). Red half-leather bindings with marbled endpapers, title in gold on the spine. The plates depict views of volcanoes, including the famous Chimborazo, considered at the time to be the highest peak on the planet, Mexican hieroglyphs, pre-Columbian architecture, Aztec sculptures, landscapes, and numerous other examples of the culture and nature of Equatorial America. This work is the most lavish of Humboldt’s publications upon his return from his five-year journey through the Andes. Fine copy of the first edition (2 volumes)
