Headpiece, title page with engraved vignette, 2 folded maps outside the text, 4 full-page watercolor plates, 7 illustrated running heads (some foxing.) Contemporary binding in sponged calfskin, spine with 5 raised bands and gilt decoration, with an olive-colored label bearing the title in gold, red edges (some sections slightly worn). A fresh, well-margined copy of the first edition of Antonio Pigafetta’s account of the voyage around the world undertaken between 1519 and 1522 as part of Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition. The work was first published by Carlo Amoretti based on a manuscript preserved at the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan, from which he transcribed the original text, written in a curious Italo-Venetian language with numerous Spanish terms. The volume also includes Pigafetta’s Collection of Vocabulary and his Summary of the Treatise on Navigation. The four watercolor plates and two maps complete this rare and important account of the first circumnavigation of the globe. Rare first edition
