Coronelli, Vincenzo. The Palaces of Venice. [Venice, published by the author, 1709]., A copy with wide margins of the rare first and only edition Coronelli, Vincenzo. The Palaces of Venice. [Venice, published by the author, 1709]. In oblong folio (300 x 405 mm). Frontispiece with allegorical figures and papal arms engraved by Pietro Ridolfi; 205 plates with titles and views of Venetian palaces, one of which is folded (sporadic stains; very few sheets are slightly browned). Contemporary binding in brown bazzana leather, with a triple dry-stamped fillet frame on the covers, a 4-rib spine with the title embossed in gold lettering, and red sprinkled edges (some peeling, minor losses). The titles are set within elaborate figurative Baroque frames. Some plates depict the festivities held on the occasion of the election of Doge Giovanni Cornaro on May 22, 1709. The remainder of the engravings is devoted to the most significant monumental architecture of the Serenissima, with particular attention to the most prestigious patrician residences. In some cases, the plates also focus on notable details, such as gardens or interior spaces. Among the most frequently depicted sites are the Doge’s Palace (10 plates), the Venice Arsenal (6 plates), and the Rialto Bridge with the buildings of its surrounding complex (5 plates). The work is part of a broader and more ambitious publishing project, the *Singolarità di Venezia*, conceived by Coronelli as a multi-volume folio series but never fully completed. Three main collections are known today under this title: *Chiese di Venezia*, *Palazzi di Venezia*, and *Palazzi della Brenta*. As with many works from Coronelli’s workshop, the number of plates and the order of the illustrations are neither fixed nor definitively established. In fact, the engravings were often initially printed as loose sheets and only later collected and organized into volumes, resulting in some variability in the compositions known today. Wide-margined copy of the rare first and only edition
