Fregoso, Battista. *De dictis factisque memorabilibus collectanea: a Camillo Gilino latina facta*. Milan, Ferrari, 1509., Christopher Columbus and Gutenberg in the First Edition by Battista Fregoso Fregoso, Battista. *De dictis factisque memorabilibus collectanea*: translated into Latin by Camillo Gilino. Milan, Ferrari, 1509. Folio (300 x 208 mm); [336] leaves. Woodcut initials. 19th-century binding in hazelnut-brown half-leather and marbled paper, spine with four raised bands, title and date stamped in gold. The work was cited by Henry Harrisse in his *Bibliotheca Americana Vetustissima* of 1866 on page 46 in the chapter dedicated to Christopher Columbus. The author, Battista Fregoso, was Doge of Genoa from 1478 to 1483. This collection of sayings and memorable events was composed in the vernacular beginning in 1486 and dedicated to his son Pietro. Unpublished at the time of the author’s death, it was translated into Latin by Camillo Gilino and printed in Milan in 1509. It is particularly famous for the passage dedicated to Christopher Columbus, praised for his knowledge of cosmography, and for the one on Johannes Gutenberg, to whom the invention of the printing press in 1440 is attributed. Christopher Columbus and Gutenberg in Battista Fregoso’s First Edition
