Marozzo, Achille. *Opera Nova*, The Most Important Master of the Bolognese School of Fencing A quarto-sized volume likely containing the first edition of Achille Marozzo’s famous *Opera Nova*, printed in 1536. This copy is headless and incomplete but of extraordinary historical and bibliographic interest, preserved in a contemporary parchment binding. The work stands as one of the greatest masterpieces of Renaissance fencing treatises and represents the most celebrated testament to the Bolognese school, to whose tradition Marozzo made the most authoritative contribution. The first edition is distinguished by its rich array of woodcut illustrations, many of which are full-page. Some of the woodcuts bear the famous “b” monogram, whose attribution has been variously traced to Francesco Barattini or Giovanni Britto. The woodcut blocks created for this edition enjoyed a long publishing life and were reused in subsequent sixteenth-century reprints. The most important master of the Bolognese school of fencing
