MINNE, GEORGE 1866 Ghent–1941 Laethem-Saint-Martin Title: "L’agenouillé à la fontaine". Subtitle: Kneeling Man. Date: Sketch, 1898. Material: Bronze, brown patina. Dimensions: 78 x 18 x 37 cm. Inscription: Signed on the base: G Minne. This bronze is based on Georg Minne’s marble fountain “Kniende vom Brunnen” (Kneeling Figures from the Fountain) from 1898, a copy of which is now on permanent display at the Museum Folkwang in Essen. Minne designed the fountain, featuring five kneeling youths, for the eighth Secession exhibition in 1900. The individual figures from the fountain evolved into the independent sculpture “Kniender Jüngling” (Kneeling Youth), which broke away from its original context and functioned as an autonomous work of art. The minimalist depiction of the hunched, naked, and ascetic-looking body opens up a wide range of interpretations and lends the figure a timeless, existential expressiveness. His bronzes are regarded as significant precursors of modern sculpture. Provenance: - Private collection, Germany. Estimated shipping costs for this lot: This lot is not suitable for parcel shipping. Transport is available only through a shipping company after consultation following the auction.
