Dimensions: 15.5 x 8.5 cm. Inscription: Monogrammed and dated lower right: AM / 61. Frame: Framed. We are grateful to Marie Riemann-Reyher, Berlin, who examined the original sheet, for her kind assistance in cataloging this work. Riemann-Reyher assumes that this work comes from one of the sketchbooks from 1860–62 that were not included in the inventory of the Berlin National-Galerie after Menzel’s death in 1906. During those years, Menzel repeatedly chose his niece Margarete and his nephew Otto—who were born in 1860 and 1861, respectively—as subjects for his drawings.
