Pancrace BESSA (1772–1846) Still Life with a Bouquet of Flowers Écouen, circa July 1844. Daguerreotype, half-plate, horizontal, image not straightened. Mounted in a white mat with an octagonal window. Hallmarks: an eight-pointed rosette within a circle; 30 within a rectangular cartouche (marked 1/30), identical to those on the View of Saint-Acceul. 16.8 x 10 cm (visible area) Provenance House in Écouen; discovered about forty years ago along with two other plates from the same set. Three plaster casts based on antiquity: a Venus lifting her drapery, of the Venus Callipyge type; a Silenus carrying the infant Dionysus; a nude Venus with missing arms. Between them, a vase decorated with drapery holds a bouquet of flowers. On the floor, seashells, a stuffed bird, and a landscape print; on the wall, a framed engraving. The studio of a flower painter, arranged for the camera: the school’s classical sculptures, seashells brought back from Egypt, and the bouquet of his trade. A revelation: a photographer of Niepce’s generation creates an image in the spirit of Bayard, Daguerre, and Hubert.
