ITALIAN School, circa 1760 The Omaggi Festival in Florence Oil on canvas. Historical restorations. 74 x 98 cm Our painting depicts the celebrations on June 24 in Florence, in Piazza della Signoria. A crowd of both aristocrats and commoners attends the feast of St. John the Baptist (Festa di San Giovanni Battista), the city’s patron saint. This popular festival is marked by fireworks, tournaments, and horse races. On this occasion, the presentation of tributes to the Grand Duke of Tuscany (Festa degli Omaggi) takes place. The magistrates and various guilds of Florence parade in procession, on horseback or on floats, displaying their insignia before the sovereign. He traditionally presides in front of the Palazzo Vecchio, as can be seen in the fresco by Giorgio Vasari and Giovanni Stradano at the Palazzo Vecchio Museum (Festa degli Omaggi in Piazza della Signoria, 136 x 110 cm, inv. no. 769). In our painting, he appears in front of the Loggia dei Lanzi, in accordance with the custom established in 1637 by Ferdinand II de’ Medici. A similar painting depicting this event was offered for sale on November 20, 2024, at Pandolfini, lot no. 50.
