Paris, Éditions du Cadran, 1989. 2 large quarto volumes, each bound in the publisher’s midnight blue shagreen, with a two-rib spine and panels cold-stamped with nautical motifs (rudder, crossed compasses, anchor), covers framed by a large cold-stamped frieze accented with gold fillets, the title repeated on the front cover and adorned with a central oval medallion illustrated in color, gold-edged interior, pale pink moiré silk linings and endpapers, gilded headband. (Design by Jean Ardouin, bookbinder in Cachan). 174 and 162 pp., 16 watercolors reproduced in color, 30 plates of preparatory drawings in blue. A delightful deluxe edition fully illustrated by Henry Lemarié (1911–1991), featuring 16 original compositions finely reproduced in color and enhanced with stencil work. Each volume is further enriched at the end with a series of 15 plates (30 plates in total) printed in blue, revealing the illustrator’s sketches and preparatory drawings. Limited edition of 1,969 copies; this one is one of 139 numbered on Arches pure-fiber vellum (first-grade paper), complete with the color set of the 16 watercolors on Lana pure-fiber paper. The world map and the framed proof listed in the proof sheet are missing, as is often the case. In fine condition.
