TRELLON, Claude de. *Le Cavalier parfait du Sieur de Trellon*. Containing all his works, divided into four books. Dedicated to His Grace the Duke of Guise. An interesting copy from the library of Gabriel Hanotaux: “saved” in the late 19th century by the librarian of Angoulême, who meticulously copied the few missing pages; the volume was subsequently bound by the bookbinder Claude Honnelaître. Lyon, Pierre Rigaud, 1614. In-16 (136 x 780 mm), half tan sheepskin with corner pieces, smooth spine decorated with small gilt ironwork, red edges. Rebinding signed by Honnelaître. 196 pp. Title page slightly browned. An excellent edition of the poetic works of Claude de Trellon, a “poet-soldier” of the late Renaissance. It was preserved by Eusèbe Chauvin, librarian of Angoulême in the late 19th century. In a note, Chauvin indicates that he faithfully copied the missing leaves of this copy (ff. 2, 11, 156–198, 234, 235) from Thibaud Ancelin’s rare 1599 edition. From the library of historian and diplomat Gabriel Hanotaux (1853–1944), bearing his ex-libris vignette. A second note, in blue ink, from a subsequent owner (Delmas?), states: “I have preserved this book, despite its precarious condition, as an example of what the restoration of a volume might look like when one wishes to save it from permanent ruin.Mr. Chauvin, librarian of Angoulême, did the bulk of the work by completing it with a copy [...] For my part, I took care of the exterior of the volume by having the old binding—which was in tatters—replaced.” Indeed, the copy is preserved in an impeccable pastiche binding by Claude Honnelaître (1925–2005), who worked for nearly half a century in his workshop at 14 Rue du Cardinal Lemoine in Paris.
