It contains a detailed description of Brazil as well as the account of the rescue of Alexander Selkirk, the inspiration for Daniel Defoe’s famous Robinson Crusoe. Amsterdam, L’Honoré and Chatelain, 1723. 2 tomes in 2 in-12 volumes (95 x 155 mm), each bound in full brown calfskin, ribbed spine, richly decorated panels with small gilt ironwork and a central fleur-de-lis, title and volume number labels in fawn leather, cold-stamped fillet framing the covers, gilt roulette on the edges, red speckled edges. 4 unnumbered folios (preface), 359 pp. and 13 unnumbered folios (table of contents); 218 pp., then 75 pp. (supplement) and 13 unnumbered folios 2 frontispieces, 13 engraved plates (7 in Volume 1, 6 in Volume 2), and 6 large fold-out maps (2 in Volume 1 and 4 in the supplement). Bindings slightly rubbed, wormhole on the lower cover of Volume 1, slight cracks forming at the top and bottom of the spines, a few small foxing spots. Second, expanded edition of the first French translation, which includes the Supplement to the 1716 edition bound following Volume 2. An account of the circumnavigation undertaken by Captain Woodes Rogers between 1708 and 1711, this work is particularly significant for the detailed description of Brazil it contains, as well as for the account of the misadventure of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish sailor who was marooned on Juan Fernández Island following a quarrel with his captain, surviving alone for 4 years and 4 months until Rogers found him—a story that inspired Daniel Defoe’s legendary character, Robinson Crusoe. As is often the case, Volume 3, as indicated in the title (“Account of the Great Amazon River and Guyana, translated by de Comberville”), is missing. Handwritten ink bookplates on the inside front cover of each volume, dated 1734. A fine set in period bindings, with fresh interiors.
