[FRENCH REVOLUTION]. “L'Écriture Sainte”: a collection of 27 royalist and Catholic texts printed in 1791 and 1792. An important collection of royalist and Catholic texts printed during the constitutional monarchy, preserved in a period binding under the title “L’Écriture Sainte.” 1 volume, in-8 (130 x 200 mm), light marbled half-basane, smooth spine decorated with friezes of gilded fleurs-de-lis, green title label “L’Écriture Sainte,” red edges. Front cover is fragile (tear at the joint), joint partially split on the lower cover, small loss of leather at the upper cap, corners and edges worn. Rare foxing and a few browned leaves. A significant artificial collection of 27 royalist and Catholic texts printed during the French Revolution, and more specifically during the brief period of the constitutional monarchy, between 1791 and 1792. Taking the form of brochures, pamphlets, satires, or works of fiction, the collection revolves around two major themes: the defense of the traditional Catholic Church against the Civil Constitution of the Clergy, and the defense of the monarchy and the old order against revolutionary measures. Among the authors, most of whom remained anonymous, is the politician and writer Camille Jordan (1771–1821), a staunch opponent of the Revolution and, in particular, of the Civil Constitution of the Clergy, and one of the royalist leaders of the Lyon Uprising against the National Convention in 1793; the lawyer and magistrate Antoine-Louis Séguier (1726–1792); Pierre-Victor Malouët, and Bishop Claude Fauchet (1744–1793), who initially took part in the Revolution before being sentenced to death on October 30, 1793, by the Revolutionary Tribunal. The collection is organized as follows: - [JORDAN, Camille]. History of the Conversion of a Young Parisian Woman. Paris, Lallemand, 1792. (64 pp.) - On the Necessity of Restoring the Clergy and Ecclesiastical and Religious Orders in France for the Good of the State, Considered from a Political Perspective. Paris, Imprimerie de Crapart, 1792. (62 pp.) - [MALOUET, Pierre-Victor]. The Journey and Conspiracy of Two Unknown Women. A True Story, drawn from all the authentic memoirs of this era. [1792]. (52 pp.). - POTTIER. The Holy Scriptures Rescued from Constitutional Prostitution, or An Examination of a Work Entitled: Reflections of a Solitary Man, Drawn from the Holy Scriptures, on the Current State of the Clergy in France. Paris, Crapart Press, 1792 (72 pp.) - [FAUCHET, Claude]. The Unfaithful Interpretation of the Holy Scriptures, or a Reasoned Response to the Sermon on the Harmony of Religion and Liberty. (47 pp.). - The Awakening of the Nation. Paris, 4th year of desolation (44 pp.) - Pastoral Letter from the Bishop of Boulogne for Lent. Paris, Guerbart Press (44 pp.). - Instruction on the Duties of the Ecclesiastical Ministry, in the Current State of the Church of France, by the Archbishop of Aix. (27 pp.) - Dedicatory Epistle to the Bishop and the Constitutional Parish Priests of Paris. (24 pp.) - The Swede in Paris. Paris, At the Palais Royal, 1792 (14 pp.) 1 engraved title vignette. - An Allegory for the Faithful. Paris, Imprimerie de Guerbart. (12 pp.) - SÉGUIER, Antoine-Louis.
