[PAMPHLETS - ROTHSCHILD]. A significant collection of 20 publications concerning the Rothschild dynasty (1846–1941). An exceptional collection bringing together the major pamphlets from the 1846 controversy surrounding James de Rothschild, supplemented by a collection of anti-Semitic publications and pamphlets extending through 1941. [Paris, Brussels, Dresden, 1846–1941] 20 volumes in-12 or in-8, paperback, in sheepskin slipcases with titles on the spine in gold lettering. Signs of handling, some foxing. An excellent collection of rare pamphlets offering a historical account of nearly a century of economic attitudes, political crises, and the development of modern anti-Semitism in France. Triggered by the terrible train accident at Fampoux in July 1846, this “war of pamphlets” laid the groundwork for a persistent popular conspiracy myth surrounding the Rothschild dynasty. As such, it constitutes one of the first major examples of modern antisemitism. This collection brings together its key pieces, from the triggering pamphlet by Georges Dairnvæll (*The Edifying and Curious History of Rothschild I, King of the Jews, by Satan*) to the virulent anonymous rebuttals and satires born of the controversy (The Great Trial Between Rothschild I and Satan the Last, or The New Lament of the Wandering Jew). This hostile rhetoric continued throughout the nationalist crises of the Third Republic, as exemplified in particular by the attacks of Édouard Drumont (*Gambetta and His Court: Jewish Barons*) and Max Bewer in Dresden (*Bismarck and Rothschild*). The dossier concludes with the ideological culmination of this century of polemics, embodied in the collaborationist propaganda published during the Occupation by Henri-Robert Petit (Rothschild, 1941). Contains: - [DAIRNVÆLL, Georges]. An Edifying and Curious History of Rothschild I, King of the Jews, by Satan. Paris, 1846. 31 pp. First edition of the legendary pamphlet that sparked the controversy following the Fampoux disaster. - DAIRNVÆLL, Georges. Rothschild I, His Servants, and His People. Paris, 1846. 32 pp. - Response from Rothschild I, King of the Jews, to Satan the Last, King of Impostors. Paris, 1846. 16 pp. - The Great Trial Between Rothschild I, King of the Jews, and Satan the Last, King of Impostors. Paris, 1846. - New Lament of the Wandering Jew Who Stopped in Paris in 184.. Under the Name of Rothschild. Paris, 1846. - What Do They Want from Us with This Rothschild I, King of the Jews and God of Finance... Brussels, 1846. - Zodiac. To Mr. Rothschild—The Jewish People. No place, no date. [1846]. - PAILLET, M. Note on Baron Nathan-James-Édouard de Rothschild. Paris, 1882. (With a portrait engraved by T. de Mare). - DRUMONT, Édouard. Gambetta and His Court. Jewish Barons. Paris, n.d. [1891]. - LE GUEU, Eugène. The Rothschilds and Messrs. Drumont, Morès, and Co. Paris, 1892. - BEWER, Max. Bismarck and Rothschild. Dresden, 1891. - KOECHLIN, Raymond. The Donors of the Louvre. The Donations of the Rothschild Family. Paris, 1909. - PETIT, Henri-Robert. Rothschild. Paris, Nouvelles Études Françaises, n.d. [1941]. Seven other pamphlets in the same vein round out this collection: *Embargo—Rothschild on the Western Railroad*; *The Rothschilds* by F. P. (1891); *Those Rothschilds!* by Paul Campana (c. 1891); The Rothschilds and the Jewish Peril by Jacques de Biez (1891); the special issue of *L’Œuvre* titled “The Rothschild Ministry” (1910); the issue of *La Revue* containing the study “History of a Fortune. The Rothschilds” (1913); and finally, a newspaper clipping titled “The Rothschild Fortune.” A cohesive collection in good condition.
