Paris, Hachette, 1949. In-8, full burgundy morocco, smooth spine adorned with a black bordered design, repeated on the covers; inner border framed by a gold fillet interspersed with three black fillets at the corners; red silk endpapers and linings; gilt head; covers and spine preserved. Binding by V. Granghaud. 348 pp. Spine slightly browned. First edition of a classic work of Proustian criticism. Copy on Holland paper (first-edition paper) specially printed for Gérald Maurois and enhanced with an autographed dedication from the author to his son “who had the wisdom to go ‘in search of’ André Maurois—and to find him.” Gérald Maurois (1920–1986), born of the writer’s first marriage to Jane-Wanda de Szymkiewicz, became a professional photographer. An excellent copy, well bound. L’Atelier de Victor Granghaud, taken over by his wife upon his death in 1940, produced numerous bindings for the Maurois family.
