[MANUSCRIPT - TOULOUSE, THEOLOGY]. *Tractatus De fide, spe et charitate, Scriptura et conciliis*. - *Tractatus De Sacramentis in genere*. A set of two 18th-century theological manuscripts reflecting the teachings imparted at the Jesuit College in Toulouse. Jesuit College (Academia Patrum Societatis Jesu), 1742. 2 in-12 volumes (16.5 x 119 cm), each bound in full brown sheepskin, ribbed spine, panels decorated with small gilt ironwork, title labels in tan leather, edges speckled with red. 400 numbered pages and 4 folios (index) handwritten; 2 folios (title, index), 398 numbered pages, and 2 folios (index). Bindings are gaping with scuffing, scuffs, stains, and small wormholes on the covers; incipient tears at the headbands. A few faint water stains. Latin manuscripts of theology lectures dictated by the Jesuit and royal professor Father Badoa, meticulously written in brown ink in a regular and uniform cursive script by the student Jean-Pierre Baylac. The text draws its direct sources from the *Summa Theologica* by Saint Thomas Aquinas, the definitive doctrinal reference for the colleges of the Society of Jesus, while drawing on the authority of the Church Fathers (notably Saint Augustine) and the decrees of the Council of Trent. The first treatise presents a dogmatic course structured around two main themes: ecclesiology and the theological virtues. The first part examines the inspiration of Scripture, Tradition, the authority of the Ecumenical Councils, and the role of the Roman Pontiff. The second part explores the virtues of Faith, Hope, and Charity, concluding with the highly contested question of “pure love,” a direct echo of the theological disputes of the time surrounding Quietism. Opening with a title page dated 1742, the second treatise provides a study of sacramental theology. The first section examines the general foundations of the sacraments, their physical nature, the minister’s intention, and their intrinsic efficacy. The remainder of the manuscript applies these principles “in particular” to the Church’s first sacraments, with extensive discussions on Baptism and the Eucharist. Worn period bindings; clean interior pages.
